At 6pm on Labor day the church near my apartment played America The Beautiful on their bells. I shall have to pay more attention to the church bells and determine if there is a pattern. Do they always play America The Beautiful at 6pm or is it special for Labor Day?

Unfortunately, today is the last day of the NY state fair and I did not go. It rained on Saturday when we had planned to go and we all pigged out for lunch today so nobody wanted to go this afternoon. Especially since a major motivating factor was fair food. Also, it looks like rain again. Oh well. There is always next year. Next weekend is the Irish Festival in Syracuse. That should be fun. Oh man I am so tired today. I think it’s because I had such a big lunch. Dinosaur Barbecue is SO good. If you come visit me I will take you there.

Darcy has decided to sit on my arms now so typing has become difficult.

Well, readers, I have successfully completed my first week as a graduate student. I have a lot of reading homework to do, but I think my classes will be interesting and fun. I met another girl in the LIS program who taught English in Japan for the last 4 years, she was in Shikoku and her cat is named Ushi (translation: cow).

Last night a group of my classmates and I went to trivia night at a local bar/pub that gives discounts to grad students (yay!) and did a fair job at answering the questions. We are in need of someone with specialized knowledge in US history and geography. We had fun despite not being in the top three (or even close).

In weather, today is quite hot but tomorrow looks like it will be very cold. According to my sources it will be around 66 degrees tomorrow and today is in the 90s. Whew.

Now, I am going to go and do some of my reading homework. Have a good day!

This weekend I attended my first class as a graduate student at Syracuse. It lasted two days and I am now one credit hour richer. It was difficult because there was a group project and presentation with people from different majors within the ischool. But I met a lot of really nice LIS students whom I will have classes with for the next two years. A couple of us even went out to celebrate surviving class #1 last night and we’ve made plans to go to the state fair on Saturday.

I don’t have class today, but I will tomorrow. I’m taking three classes this semester on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. One of them is about international librarianship and i’m really interested in the guest presenters.

Today I am doing laundry, cleaning my apartment, and trying to continue unpacking.

I am sitting on a bench watching people walk by and killing time before orientation. It is very weird. I don’t feel the excitement of the new students walking by. I feel more like an observer than participant. Maybe because I have been to college before. Anyways, the campus looks beautiful. And I just saw my first squirrel. This is gonna be great!

One thing about my new apartment that I really love is that I can hear church bells chiming every hour. Right now, I know that it is noon, because the bells are playing a song. I much prefer the church bells to the train sounds of my old apartment in Nagoya.

Also, it is August. Why the hell is it only 70 degrees? I’m cold!

After driving about 13 hours with two cats, we made it to our new home around 10pm last night. During the first two hours of the drive Lizzy tore up the inside of her carrier, bloodied one of her front claws trying to escape, rubbed her nose raw on the mesh sides of her carrier, and escaped (twice) through the top zipper. Darcy was quiet and tolerant. Eventually, to save my sanity and Lizzy’s health I allowed her to roam the car freely as long as she didn’t try to sit on me or climb down by my feet. She calmed down completely after that and snuggled down into the litter box top in the back seat. Next time we take a long drive she will be sedated or I am not going. Absolutely horrible drive. Absolutely psychotic cat.
They appear to be settling into our new home nicely. They have both spent most of the morning peering out the windows and following me from room to room. Currently I am sipping tea and enjoying the view from my living room.
On the to-do list today is grocery shopping and homework with a side order of unpacking. I already called to set up my Internet. They are coming to install it on Tuesday. Until then, I will make do with my iPhone.

I got a new computer. It arrived in the mail yesterday and I am making my first update from it. It’s a cute little MacBook Pro. Can you guess what I named it? I’m sure Summer can (one of my names for Trifecta struck me as a good name for a laptop). Anyways. There are two days left before I leave for the long drive to Syracuse where I will remain for the duration of my Masters program. Aside from short holidays and vacations of course. But I was going to tell you about my computer. It’s a laptop. Oh no! I’ve finally gone over to the dark side! Well, not really. It is a Mac after all. But I decided I needed something I could tote back and forth to school with me. And this is much more portable than my MacMini. I’m gonna play with it some more, see ya later!
